By connecting science, policy, and practice, CLIMAAX enables regions and communities to adapt to the growing risks of climate change. Through innovation, collaboration, and local empowerment, the project contributes directly to building a resilient and climate-prepared Europe.
The CLIMAAX Financial Support for Third Parties (FSTP) mechanism provides financial, technical, and methodological support to regions and communities across Europe to carry out regional Climate Risk Assessments. The mechanism enables beneficiaries to adopt and implement the CLIMAAX Framework and Toolbox, conduct multi-risk climate assessments, identify vulnerabilities, and design evidence-based adaptation strategies tailored to their local context.
Empowering EU Regions
The CLIMAAX project has selected and supported a total of 68 regions and communities from 15 countries to receive over EUR 12 million in financial and technical support from the Mission on Adaptation to Climate Change for regional Climate Risk Assessments.
This diverse group of regions, stretching from the far North to the Mediterranean and from East to West, represents comprehensive European coverage. Their efforts play a crucial role in implementing the CLIMAAX framework and in creating a network of knowledge and best practices to help climate-proof Europe.
Success Stories
The first CLIMAAX Success Story takes us to Catalonia, where Sergio Delgado Molina, Directorate-General for Civil Protection – Generalitat de Catalunya, shares how the region is strengthening its resilience to extreme events, such as heavy rainfall, and improving its climate risk management.
Guided by Ygit Beydag, from the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality, we explore how the city of Izmir, Turkey, is applying CLIMAAX’s tools to assess the city’s vulnerability to a diverse range of hazards, including extreme precipitation, heatwaves, agricultural drought and coastal flooding.
The third story transports us to Banská Bystrica, Slovakia, where Andrea Rúfusová, from the Banská Bystrica Self-governing Region, explains how this region is implementing a multi-step adaptation strategy to address floods and wildfires.
Catalina Petre, from the National Institute of Hydrology and Water Management – Romania, explains how her team is assessing flood risks in the Putna River Basin, Romania, to enhance preparedness and resilience in vulnerable communities.
With the insights of Marco Pregnolato, Lombardy Foundation for the Environment, we travel to the Mountain Community of Valchiavenna, Italy, where the region is tackling hydrogeological risks and heavy rainfall.
Kevin Lamy, Réunion Regional Council, and Nils Poncet, CNRS/OSU-Réunion, delve into the development of the Réunion Island‘s Climate Risk Atlas. The island is exposed to several natural risks exacerbated by climate change.
Miso Hudak, from the city of Košice, Solvakia, explains how the city is assessing urban heat waves risks through data-driven metodologies to prepare and protect vulnerable communities from climate change impacts.
Guided by Hediye Cerit from the Cattle Breeders Association of Aydın Province, Türkiye, we explore the region’s approach to addressing increasing heat waves, extreme rainfall, and agricultural droughts to climate-proof the farming sector.
With insights from Rui Silva of the Comunidade Intermunicipal do Baixo Alentejo, Portugal, we learn how the region is evaluating agricultural droughts, heat waves, and wildfires, paving the way for more resilient rural landscapes.
Iason Markantonis, Aigaleo Municipality, Greece, and Demokritos Research Center, uncovers how the city is addressing heat waves and wildfires to better protect socially vulnerable communities.
First Open Call
Thirty-two regions from 13 countries have been selected in CLIMAAX’s first open call to receive a total of over €5.4 million in funding. Each selected project is expected to receive up to €300,000.
The first call was a great success! Greece had the highest number of funded projects in the first CLIMAAX Open Call, with six selected, the maximum per country. Bulgaria, Portugal, and Türkiye followed with four each.
Second Open Call
The second Open Call added 37 new regions to the CLIMAAX network. Grants range from €115,227 to €300,000, with selected regions spanning 18 countries across Europe.
Albania, Bulgaria, Italy, Portugal, Sweden, and Türkiye count the highest number of projects selected in the second CLIMAAX Open Call, with three projects funded in each country. Several other countries celebrated their first project.
Regions Support Webinars
Through this series of webinars, CLIMAAX experts provide essential information to all interested FSTP regions, helping them effectively engage in the selection and implementation of science-based climate resilience measures by applying the CLIMAAX framework.
