CLIMAAX Seminar Supports Climate Risk Assessment in Bijelo Polje

A CLIMAAX seminar in Bijelo Polje brought together local and national stakeholders to discuss climate risk assessment, with a focus on flood and wildfire risks.

A seminar on the CLIMAAX project was held in Bijelo Polje as part of the programme funded by the European Union through Horizon Europe. The event focused on the assessment of climate risks in the municipality, with particular attention given to flood and wildfire risks.

The seminar brought together representatives of the Ministry of Interior of Montenegro’s Directorate for Emergency Situations, the Protection and Rescue Service of the Municipality of Bijelo Polje, and the municipality’s EU Office. Participants discussed ongoing efforts to strengthen local understanding of climate-related hazards and improve preparedness for future risks.

During the event, it was highlighted that Bijelo Polje is the first municipality in Montenegro to implement this type of project, placing it among the early adopters of European methodologies for climate risk assessment.

The seminar also showcased how the CLIMAAX framework translates local climate challenges into maps, graphs, and analytical evidence that can support future planning and risk management activities.

Goran Prebiračević, Head of the EU Office of the Municipality of Bijelo Polje, stated that the CLIMAAX project represents an important step towards strengthening Bijelo Polje’s resilience to climate risks, as well as towards better coordination between municipal and national institutions. The seminar participants agreed that the next phases of the project will be particularly important for the further development of local data, the more precise identification of priority areas, and the linking of results with concrete activities in the fields of protection and rescue, spatial planning and local development.
