EU Mission on Adaptation to Climate Change

Climate change affects regions, sectors of the economy and members of society in many ways, and EU regions and cities have different climate vulnerabilities and levels of preparedness. Adapting to climate change means taking action to prepare for and adjust to both the current effects of climate change and the predicted impacts of the future.

The EU Mission on Adaptation to Climate Change empowers European regions and local authorities to achieve climate resilience, aiming to guide at least 150 communities through understanding climate risks, developing pathways for preparation, and implementing innovative solutions by 2030.

Adaptation to Climate Change

The Mission on Adaptation to Climate Change focuses on supporting EU regions, cities and local authorities in their efforts to build resilience against the impacts of climate change. The Mission contributes to putting the EU’s adaptation strategy in practice by helping the regions to:

  • better understand the climate risks they are and will be confronted with in the future;
  • develop their pathways to be better prepared and cope with the changing climate;
  • test and deploy on the ground innovative solutions needed to build resilience.

The Mission’s objective is to accompany by 2030 at least 150 European regions and communities towards climate resilience.

The EU Missions

The 5 EU Missions represent a new approach to addressing some of our greatest challenges. They set ambitious goals and aim to deliver concrete results by 2030. These missions place research and innovation in a new role, combining them with novel forms of governance and collaboration, and actively engaging citizens throughout the process.

EU Missions support Europe’s transformation into a greener, healthier, more inclusive, and more resilient continent. They are designed to bring tangible benefits to people across Europe and to involve citizens in their design, implementation, and monitoring.

Each mission functions as a portfolio of coordinated actions – such as research projects, policy measures, or even legislative initiatives -working together to achieve a measurable goal that could not be accomplished through isolated efforts.
