Heraklion Celebrated Europe Day with Focus on EU Support Policies and Youth Engagement

Stakeholders from local authorities, academia, and regional institutions gathered in Xanthi to discuss climate resilience, share project results, and strengthen cooperation under the CLIMAAX Horizon Europe programme.

On Monday, May 11, Heraklion hosted a series of events dedicated to Europe and the European Union’s development and support policies. The initiative was organized collaboratively by Europe Direct of the Region of Crete and the Regional Directorate of Education of Crete to commemorate Europe Day.

Student groups from six schools – ambassadors of the European Parliament – presented the results of their work, which focused on initiatives and projects funded by European resources, effectively demonstrating the contributions of the European Union to local development and the daily lives of citizens.

The itinerary featured a panel discussion comprising representatives from local government bodies and European program management organizations. Additionally, structured information sessions were conducted on key thematic areas, including education, entrepreneurship, climate change, and sustainable development. These sessions provided citizens with direct access to comprehensive data regarding European Union policies and available funding instruments and tools.

The event highlighted the strategic importance of European funding frameworks for the advancement of Crete. Furthermore, it emphasized the critical necessity of fostering active civic participation among young people within the broader public discourse regarding the future of Europe.

Distinguished institutional participants and co-organizers included the Department of International Relations of the University of Crete, the Heraklion Chamber of Commerce, Ambassadors of the European Climate Pact, and the Independent Directorate of Climate Change of the Region of Crete.

The CLIMAAX CRETE team’s participation in the Europe Day event was active and engaged. This participation included the display of a banner showcasing the CLIMAte risk and vulnerability Assessment framework and toolboX project, as well as the facilitation of open discussions with individuals expressing interest in acquiring further information regarding the instances of drought and flooding events that have occurred on the island of Crete.
