Rafina–Pikermi Municipality: Building Climate Resilience from Port to Schools

The CLIMAAX project helps strengthen climate resilience in Rafina–Pikermi through improved port preparedness, sustainable infrastructure, and climate education for the local community.

Located on Greece’s eastern coast, Rafina is one of the country’s busiest passenger ports—welcoming over 2 million tourists and 450,000 vehicles every year as a key gateway to the Aegean islands. Recognizing its strategic importance, Mayor Dimitra Tseva recently met with Port Authority Commander Lt. Commander Angelos Kiousis to strengthen cooperation on climate risk preparedness and sustainable port development. Supported by the CLIMAAX project, the Municipality is advancing plans to enhance the resilience of essential infrastructures against extreme weather events, floods, and heatwaves.

But resilience in Rafina–Pikermi extends beyond physical infrastructure. The Municipality is also investing in climate education and awareness as a foundation for long-term adaptation. In a recent initiative, the Deputy Mayor for Civil Protection, Mr. Charalampos Zafeiropoulos, met with students from the local Gymnasium to present findings from the Rafina Risk and Vulnerability Assessment (RAFRVA). The session helped students understand local hazards—such as heatwaves and floods—while highlighting the value of green spaces, flood protection works, and citizen participation.

By engaging both institutional stakeholders and the younger generation, Rafina–Pikermi is shaping a holistic model of climate adaptation—one that connects safety at sea, resilience in the city, and awareness in the community.
