New flood hazard assessment workflow added to the CLIMAAX Handbook

The workflow uses a publicly available HCII dataset to assess how climate change may alter river discharges across Europe, based on simulations from a continental hydrological model.

A new workflow has been added to the CLIMAAX Handbook, demonstrating how to assess river flood hazards using river discharge statistics. This workflow guides users through the process of assessing flood hazard based on long-term hydrological model data, including the analysis of seasonal statistics and extreme events across different climate scenarios, models, and time periods. The approach offers a practical and transparent method to explore potential changes in flood hazards.

Developed using the Hydrological Climate Impact Indicators (HCII) dataset – produced by the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute and available on the Climate Data Store – this workflow also includes detailed example on how to access the data and how to validate the model data against observations, allowing to relate the model data to real-world observations. The workflow was developed by Deltares in collaboration with ECMWF and the Romanian National Institute of Hydrology and Water Management.

Users are encouraged to explore this new workflow in the CLIMAAX Handbook and use it to support their regional flood hazard assessments! (by Natalia Aleksandrova, Deltares)
