SUMMARY:Žilina hosts CLIMAAX first on-site-visit
DESCRIPTION:Žilina (Slovakia) will host the first on-site-visit of CLIMAAX pilot regions. The stay in the city will last two half days from 27th to 28th of April. The main priorities of the team will be: to get impression of the geographic setting (landscape, city); talk to people that are not inside the consortium about risk assessment, civil protection, city planning, economy; presentation of locals about GIS, adaptation strategy; answering questions at the end.\nThe second-level priorities includes: sightseeing, mountains, recreation industry; lecturing to other stakeholders in the region; including people from Slovak Technical University and other national bodies.\nAbout the pilot\nŽilina is the fourth largest city of Slovakia, and capital town of a region and a district of the same name, home to 80,000 inhabitants (city). Located in the north central part of the country, at the confluence of Váh, Kysuca and Rajčianka rivers. The Žilina city and district is a part of the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) (Baltic Adriatic Corridor).\nThe Žilina valley is characterised by continental climate and is exposed to a host of climate-related risks, including pluvial and fluvial floodings (and natural hazard-induced technological risks, NATECH), protracted droughts (and subsequent forest dieback), forest fire, landslides and extreme heat.\nThe city and surrounding valley is an ideal testbed for developing the regional Climate Risk Assessment framework (WP1) and toolbox (WP2), building upon the existing climate risk viewer and contributing to the urban climate adaptation strategy and action plan, which is under development.\n
